Please help me help Dog Guides continue to fulfill their important mission

My daughter Kate was born profoundly deaf. Up until that moment the only people I had ever known with hearing loss were elderly so the prospect of raising a deaf child was daunting to say the least. What was even more daunting to me was the thought of Kate growing up: what did the future hold for her, and how would I keep her safe?

My questions were answered when I became involved with the parent support network at VOICE for Deaf and Hard of Hearing Children. When I attended their annual conference for the first time I learned about hearing dogs from the Dog Guides volunteer. As a lifelong dog lover the prospect of Kate having a hearing dog once she left home was the answer to my prayers. Her future was bright.

Unfortunately Dog Guides’ future is in jeopardy so in celebration of my upcoming birthday in October I am asking for your support to help them continue to fulfill their important mission to train Hearing Dog Guides and others in a total of seven different programs. To change the lives of individuals like Kate and give their families peace of mind knowing that they have an intelligent, loyal and hardworking Dog Guide (and loving companion) by their side.

Message from the organization:

We’ve had to pause construction on our new Dog Guide training school because of a $20 million shortfall. Without urgent action, construction could be halted permanently, and our capacity to operate our training program could be lost.

We are calling on the public to raise $5 Million toward the shortfall, and we need help urgently to get building again, secure the future of our programs, and meet the growing demand from Canadians waiting for a life-changing Dog Guide. Every contribution, large or small, will bring us closer to opening the doors of this world-class facility, safeguarding our programs, and giving Canadians living with disabilities greater independence, safety, and support.

Thank you for your generosity

Tuesday 30th Sep

A heartfelt thank you to the many friends and family members who have made a donation to LFC Dog Guides. Your generous support is especially timely as the organization is facing a significant shortfall in the midst of the construction of their new larger, full-accessible facility (due to the unexpected timing of a significant piece of funding, increased costs following the pandemic, etc).

My daughter Kate applied for a hearing dog when she was still in high school hoping to be matched with a dog by the time she left home to go to university (and she is just beginning her 5th year at University of Toronto). The new Dog Guides facility is slated to open next year and, assuming the fundraising target is met so construction can resume, it will permit the organization to train and match more dogs to decrease wait times and keep up with the ever increasing demand. There are currently 1,000 dog guide teams across the country; the cost to breed, train and match each of these dogs is $35,000 and since the organization does not receive any government funding, it is solely dependent on the generosity of individual and corporate donors (like you!)

Dog Walk with Dixie

Sunday 21st Sep
Dog Guides holds an annual fundraising dog walk across the country. I attended the Guelph event with my beloved dog Dixie almost 20 years ago. It was a wonderful opportunity to meet other dog lovers and Dog Guides volunteers and learn more about the organization and the work they do. Dixie and I walked with a puppy raiser who explained that raising a future Dog Guide was like raising a child: even though you would miss them when they left home your hope should be that they grow up, excel at school and eventually get a job. I had never considered that before but it made a lot of sense and when I ever become a puppy raiser I will be sure to try to take her advice to heart.
