Our Dogs are Ready to Work. But our Future is in Jeopardy.
If you know me, you know I am not the type of person to ever ask anyone for anything, especially fundraising. I’m the type of person who’d pay for the entire box of chocolates than ever ask anyone for support. Today I received devastating news that made me swallow my pride, put my heart on my sleeve and reach out for support.
DogGuides is at risk of having to close their program 😭. If that happens that means Braydon won’t be able to have a successor dog after Tumnus retires. That will be a huge loss of independence and freedom for not only Braydon, but my whole family.
Braydon got his first service dog Keats in kindergarten. When we got Keats Braydon was pretty much non verbal. When that beautiful apricot poodle licked his lil face the first time they met, he strang together a 3 word sentence “ Keatsy I said” !!! Up until that point i never imagined he’d ever say anything in meaningful context. Keats not only broke down barriers for Braydon, he broke down barriers for every child that benifits from a service dog in the st James school division today!! Braydon is now an adult and doesn’t let me take pictures, but behind every outing and beach day Tumnus is there keeping things under control and making freedom and independence possible.
I know things are difficult right now. If you can please donate even $5. Every dollar makes an impact. If you are not in a place to donate and want to help please share and get the word out. Share a story below about Keats or Tumnus or how DogGuides has impacted your life.
We’ve had to pause construction on our new Dog Guide training school because of a $20 million shortfall. Without urgent action, construction could be halted permanently, and our capacity to operate our training program could be lost.
We are calling on the public to raise $5 Million toward the shortfall, and we need help urgently to get building again, secure the future of our programs, and meet the growing demand from Canadians waiting for a life-changing Dog Guide. Every contribution, large or small, will bring us closer to opening the doors of this world-class facility, safeguarding our programs, and giving Canadians living with disabilities greater independence, safety, and support.

Being an EA who worked together with Braydon and Keats for 2 years, I can attest to how valuable their relationship was. It was inspiring to watch how Keats supported Braydon through his days and see the growth that he was able to make. Dog Guides is an invaluable program that changes lives!!

What a wonderfully helpful program. I hope they will reconsider and keep it going for those who need it.

Reading about Keats inspired me to start fostering for Dog Guides back in 2012. And Tumnus was my Pandemic Puppy - the hardest one to give back of the 9 I had raised between 2013 and 2020. Seeing and hearing how much he has meant to Brayden and to you gives me great joy and fulfillment. I’d be heartbroken if this all had to shut down.
